AFSF’s 22nd Annual Awards Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, at The City Club, 155 Sansome Street, 11th Floor in San Francisco.  The event will begin at 7:30 am with check-in and coffee.  Breakfast will begin at 8:00 am and conclude by 9:30 am. This event honors outstanding teachers, principals, students, architects, and designers working on design education projects in classrooms, firms, and community organizations throughout the SF Bay area. This annual awards event is attended by over 150 architects, engineers, contractors, educators, students, and civic leaders.

The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco (AFSF) is a non-profit educational organization that involves elementary and secondary school students and youth from across the globe through a mentored appreciation of architecture, engineering, construction, and the design process.

Past keynote speakers have included noted designer Alexander Julian, SFUSD Superintendent Carlos Garcia, Milton Chen, Exec. Dir. of The George Lucas Educational Foundation, David Macaulay, author and illustrator, Dr. Tom Peters, Pres. and CEO of the Marin Community Foundation, Dr. Sandra Hernandez, CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, Keith Wheeler, Pres. and CEO of the Foundation for Our Future at the Center for a Sustainable Future, and Moy Eng, Program Dir. of the Performing Arts Program and The William and Flora Hewitt Foundation.

Proceeds support AFSF’s educational programs that have served more than 53,000 students. Sixty-five percent of the students represent ethnic minorities and more than 50 languages are spoken in their homes. It is an imperative of these programs to provide equal access to all classrooms, regardless of campus circumstances such as test-score rankings, neighborhood, or discretionary budget. Our participants have included a very wide range of youth, from students in public school systems, participants from government agencies, community organizations, and youth in Foster Care and the Juvenile Justice Systems.

We seek to build a community of major long-term partnerships of design, business, and education professionals around mutually beneficial activities that assist children to become artists and creators of their own communities.

AFSF breakfasts honor high school students and young adults who have participated in AFSF programs, as well as the architects, engineers and other design professionals who have volunteered with AFSF to mentor our students.

In addition, the AFSF Awards Breakfast is the event at which the Kirby Ward Fitzpatrick prize is named and recognized.  Awarded in recognition of the best new building completed in that year, designed by a small firm in San Francisco, the prize is named in honor of SF architect Kirby Ward Fitzpatrick (1935-1988) whose own award winning designs include the Peralta Elementary School in Oakland (with Dan Solomon).   Inaugurated in 2005, the KWF Award includes $2500 presented to the winning building’s architect
